Ombord på kabelfartyget Great Eastern följde en journalist och en tecknare det svåra arbetet att lägga telegrafkabeln. Här är en ögonblicksbild från den 2 augusti 1865 då man upptäckt att kabeln brustit The Illustrated London News i augusti 1865
The Great Eastern var vid sjösättandet 1858 världens största fartyg. Förutom passagerartrafik användes fartyget för att lägga ut telegrafkabel på atlantens botten. Illustration ur Schellen,H. Das atlantische Kabel, 1867.

Text på baksida "Chaco, which represents the type of cruiser seen frequently on the Great Lakes, is 60 x 10'6", and is the property of Mr. Peter G. Thomson, Jr., Vice President of the Champion Coated Pape r Co., of Hamilton, Ohio. She was built by the Matthews Boat Company of Port Clinton, Chic, and is powered with twin Model F, 6 cylinder 120-170 HP. Sterlings. Her speed is 25 M.P.H., which she can retain for long periods. She carries fuel for 500 miles, and sleeps nine persons aboard."

Text på baksida Text på baksida "Glider m. luft", "Completes air propeller for boat", "After 49 years of constant work, Rudoph Schmidt, 80 years old, of Cincinnati, Ohio, perfected the dream of a life-time, a peculiar air propeller which can be sued as easily on a boat as an airplane. With this invention the boat can make 15 miles an hour against a river current and at a great saving of gasoline. Since 1874 Schmidt has been working incessantly and his first air propeller, obtaining its power from a steam engine, propelled a canal boat 130 feet long, carrying 90 persons. Text på baksida "Miss Liberty, a standardized cruiser built in quantiy at a reasonable price by the Great Lakes Boat Building Corp. Milwaukee, Wis. This vessel measures 52' x 11'6", and is guaranteed to cruise day after day at a speed of over 20 M.P.H. There are sleeping accomodations for 6 persons and a crew of 2. When delivered these vessels are furnished complete with table lines, silverware, etc., and at the option of the owner a Victrola may be installed. The motor is an 8-cylinder Sterling engine of 180.200 H.P. chosen for remarkable running qualities, and because even at a high speed there is a noticeable absence of vibration. The motor is all enclosed so that no gasoline fumes escape into the engine room, the enclosure having been worked out in the design of the engine. Elctric starter and electric generator are an intergral part of the engine and all controls are brought to the bridge deck amid ship so that these vessels may be operated by one man. This particuar vessel is owned by Mr. Humphrey Birge of Buffalo, Ny.Y. and carries a crew consisting of an angineer and cook, the pwner preferring to handle the boat himself. Vessels of this type maintain a speed comparable to the average automobile entour. Miss Liberty for instance frequently travels over 200 miles per day on cruises of from 1 to 2000 miles duration. This speed is mainted easily from morning to evening approximately 20 hours, and figures about 20 M.P.H."
