The first naval conflict between ironclad vessels took place on March 9, 1862, between the Confederate Navy's "Merrimac" (left) and the United States Navy's "Monitor". Meeting at Hampton Roads in the State of Virginia, the two ships fought an indecisive battle, leaving unchanged the blockade of the Chesapeake Bay and the Confederate control of the James River.
